Freesat PSu QRM

Postby G3PTU » Tue 24 Jun 2008, 10:02

I have trackeled a noise out of a Goodmans Freeview box plugin PSU. These are only just on the market.
The QRM was a screeming noise on 4meters, with a similar noise detected by my QRM sniffer rx next to the device. There did not appear to be much on the mains lead it was plugged into.
The device is very small yet delivers quite a big output. It is equiped with a lump of Ferrite around the output lead (low volts output) but this at the staterlite box end. Whether this is to remove Rf into the sat box or not is open to speculation.
What is needed was another piece of Ferrite at the PSU end of the cable.
Two passes though a clip on and all is quiet.
The lead is about quarter lamda on 4 meters.
I have expressed the problem to Goodmans.

That's interesting, David. We've had a Grundig Freesat HD box for several weeks (we got one of the early release) and I can't say I've noticed anything serious. A MW radio held within about 1m of the box shows a slight twittering/burbling noise, but it doesn't get far.
I'll investigate further...

I have had a reply from 'Goodmans', in which they wish me to try another PSU. This should be with me soon.
I will post what I find on this site.
At least a) I do know what to do to cure the one I have and b) They are showing some interest.

It'll be interesting to see what difference it makes. The PSU on our Grundig (Bush, Goodmans and Grundig boxes are all the same internally) is marked JENTEC Technology, model no AG2412-C in painfully small writing.

This one (the replacement; see thread in this topic) is a lot better. I have never the less transfered the Ferrite on the output lead to the new one. This inocant looking plug-in has a big 12Volts at 2Amps output.
The lead is about 1.5m long with the manifacturers ferrite lump just short of this at the Saterlitte box end - so the stub is (say) 1.3m long - about 4meters divide by 4.
I did check on 6 meters and it was hell on there.
Can I thank Goodmans industries for being coperative over this.
Maybe it should be now engrained in my mind and demina to always fit ferrite on everything. Anybody got a clip-on for the cats tail?!
