That sounds nearer the mark than the other one, if it was good I'd pay more than $200, you don't get much for that.

I would pay more than 200 euros as well- if the rig satisfies my needs.
I have a Spectrum transverter and a Yaesu FT817 as driver at the moment for DX. Works very well when prop is up. If you can beat that set-up with a well made rig I am in the shop to buy....

AM may be used rarely for QSOs but it's the most sensitive mode for tracking noise sources, so I rate it as essential (along with CW).
I still wouldn't buy any such transceiver, I'd prefer to build it.

What I do notice is a complete lack of specifications.
Sensitivity, S/N, image, what IF frequencies, intermod etc, etc.
Of much more interest to me than memories (I still can't see a need for that), or software programming.

If it would include CW I am into it. Pity no AM, but have already AM capable hardware, so no big miss (specially if it would have be an "no modulation transformer" circuit, sounding as nowadays Yaesu). Memories not needed (even CPU engine, just PLL). Fancy LCD also, simple LED frequency display would do me. No PC programmable fancy features. Just plain rig. Kill me, but "cb freebanders" RCI6900 could be a good example how to make simple, yet fully featured multi mode rig, just to add full VFO knob instead of "channels".

Why would you buy this based on 'cosmetic' specifications' - just a description of bells and whistles - when the essential specifications such as sensitivity, niose figure, intermodulation characteristics, bandwidth filtering etc havent even been mentioned.

My point exactly.
I would have thought the

Sensitivity, S/N, image, what IF frequencies, intermod etc, etc.

mentioned in my previous posting, would be the important things and any facilities secondary.

It seems that the bells and whistles are more important than basic functionality these days.

I think, for $200, you'd get what you'd paid for, and that won't be a great deal if the device is aimed at satisfying all users desires. As a first pass "what do you want it to do?" type survey, the bells and whistles are all that matter initially. No point in discussing selectivity, if we haven't even decided if it matters. In my opinion, there are two types of users on 4m:
- SSB and CW low signal level people
- FM people
This device should perhaps aim at the low signal level people. These people are also the people who might be more inclined to buy it and build it as a kit, and maybe even be willing to pay a little more. I also think it's unlikely that the SSB and CW users will want channels and FM. I put beacons in 'channels', and even that is just a nice-to-have. The requirement for AM is totally specious. A tuning knob is essential.
If it was an SSB/CW only, tunable, sensitive, SDR style, cheapish kit, then I would buy it. Start adding FM and AM, and channels and squelch, and it will become a fruit cocktail. And I probably wouldn't buy it.
