OZ transverter with TS2000

Postby G3RIR » Tue 11 Oct 2011, 07:16

I have just purchased a 4m transverter kit from OZ2M and I intend to use it with my TS2000. How have others got round the issue that the minimum power from the TS2000 on 28 MHz is 5W. I don't want 30dB attenuation in the receive path. Is there a way of reducing the output form the TS2000?

I used the same equipment for years,

Split I.F. is the key,

28mhz rx goes into the receive ant RCA socket, 28mhz tx via a 40db pad through antenna "A" SO239

Yes, the RX input is a good way but unfortunately I use the RX socket for the IF o/p mode I made to the TS2000. I use a Softrock on the IF. I suppose finding another way for the IF out would be a good idea.

Has anyone experimented with using the ALC of the TS2000 to control the power output maybe reducing it to such a low level that an external attenuator is not needed?

An approach that works with any transceiver is to include a changeover relay which connects to a power attenuator on transmit, and straight through on receive. You can see five 2W resistors in parallel on LHS of this image

Any small relay that's reasonably fast will do - I use the BT47 - easily available and switch in a few mS.

Apparently the transverter o/p on the TS2000 can be reduced via Kenwood's software, that is something I came across on the Yahoo TS2000 group years ago and can't confirm it.

Grahams approach seems a nice straightforward way around the issue.

TS-2000 + Transverter

Postby GM0GTU » Tue 18 Oct 2011, 11:14

G0UWK,
I wasn't aware that the TS-2000 had a transverter o/p? One can enter an offset frequency so that the display reads the actual operating frequency rather than the IF freq.

Stewart the rig can be put into transverter mode via the menu, then either ANT "A" or ANT "B" SO239 socket (user chooses which) becomes the dedicated 5w only transceive transverter port, it is also possible to switch in the rx ant to use for split I.F. operation.

When in transverter mode the rigs o/p is limited to 5w and is not adjustable, apparently this can be changed by programming the transceiver via Kenwood supplied software.

The TS2000 needs to have it’s covers removed and the software interface cable plugs directly onto the board.

I have not carried out this mod myself to my TS2000, but have come across this as mentioned in the previous post.
The TS2000 works very well with the OZ transverter, I used the combination for two years with the split I.F. option.
