MSK144 and FT8 frequencies?

MSK144 and FT8 frequencies?

Postby G4IJE » Tue 1 Aug 2017, 18:05

With the Perseids coming soon, I would like to try making some MS QSOs on 4 metres. I have only 50 watts to a 2 element yagi (Es has been a real struggle!) but it might just be possible to work a few stations during a major shower. Is there a frequency on 4m for MSK144?

FT8 looks like fun too. I have yet to work PA and ON so perhaps that might be possible. I am in JO01HP but have a very poor VHF location. I sometimes hear PA during the UKAC but it's never their frequency!

(I should add that I am completely new to WSJT. I think I have it set up correctly but I was surprised by how few signals I could decode on 50.313MHz. Lots of strong signals but only a few that decoded. Perhaps the continuous impulse-type noise I have on that band confuses the decoder? I plan to swap my dual-band 2 element for a mono band LFA for 4m soon as 6m is just too noisy now.)

Any suggestions for an FT8 frequency to try? I'd love to work PA and ON for new countries.

Thanks and 73, Paul G4IJE.

Hi

I am in no position to say, but these are the frequencies I have heard and worked people on recently:-

FT8 70.174
JT65 70.176
MSK144 70.280

During the period when German stations have been licensed I have heard MSK144 on 70.170 and 70.176, and various frequencies in between.

Given the various allocations, different stations use different frequencies. For example, MSK144 from Spain is often heard around 70.170. The knack seems to be to turn the VFO and keep off the beacon frequencies.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your thoughts. I guess it's hard to specify one frequency for each mode when some countries have different allocations to others. I have managed one QSO on FT8 but I'm still looking for PA and ON.

It was nice to work you when I was in Northumberland in June. I had a few Es QSOs on 4 metres which was great fun.

Paul
You proberly know this already
On meteor scatter modes have your RX filter as wide as possible ....when I was doing meteor scatter initially I had 7300 filter narrow , and like you was seeing big ms signals but no decodes ....someone told me to set RX filters wide and I immediately started decoding no problem .
Cheers

Thanks for that Steve. I haven't given filter width much thought, but I guess it makes sense that the high speed modes need a wide filter. FT8 could possibly use a narrower filter.

I ran some FT8 tests with PA5M last weekend but although signals were heard both ways we have not yet had a QSO. I had some timing issues on the first test and a delay on my PTT on the second test. Both now resolved, so hopefully we can try again.

Anyone else for an FT8 test on 4m?

Even without apparant tropo condtions I made succesful QSO's with JO and IO after a random CQ call on 70.174 in FT8.

I use WSJT-X V1.8 - RC2, which is working fine. So when you are on KST chat, I would be happy to try when I am there.

CU on 4 m in FT8, SSB or MSK144

Hi Harry,

I have now worked PA0RDY in JO22 on FT8 for a new country and square, but I still need JO21 so I will look for you on the chat. I worked 8 stations on MSK144 in the Perseids. All of them were new squares and two were new countries. I still need ON on 4 metres. I'm not in a very good VHF location and have only a 2 element yagi, but take-off east is not too bad. I plan to put up a 4 element LFA in a few weeks which should improve my signal.
