70MHz mobile antenna?

Postby M0BOP » Sat 30 Apr 2016, 14:13

I've just acquired a new Wouxun mobile and fitted it in the car. The dealer (that one in Staines!) told me their 70MHz antennas are withdrawn from sale because they are way too short.

Does anyone know a source for decent antenna for the car? PL259 fitting.

What Wouxun radio have you brought?

If it is the quadband one, i recommend this because it covers all 4 bands:

4m mobile antenna on it's own? I recommend this one:

hope this helps :)

Thanks Selim! However I think Moonraker have a pretty poor reputation amongst this community. Do you actually use it yourself? If so, what's your experience?

It's the 4-band Wouxun with 50/70/144/430 MHz.

i've used the moonraker 4m mobile antenna for a number of years and it's the best 4m mobile antenna you can buy! :)

Hi. I'm looking for a mobile antenna for the 4m band and I see this one.
Someone who knows this brand and this antenna?
Charles from The Hague in The Netherlands.
I'm using google translator for this forum.

Hi Chris

Having used them for a couple of years now, I can confirm that Moonraker 4m mobile whips work very well. I have them on both of my vehicles, one with a Wouxun and one with an IC7100. They are easy to cut to length to get a 1:1 SWR.

The antenna has a PL259 fitting which attaches to a standard SO239 mount. An added bonus is the spring mount at the bottom, which prevents it from destroying itself if you drive into a multi-storey car park or hit an overhanging branch.

The Mirfield antenna which Selim mentions can be a useful quad-band compromise, but be aware that the SWR can be a bit high on the lower bands (they quote up to 2:1 on 4m and 2.5:1 on 6m) and in common with some other Chinese-made antennas, it may suffer in wet weather (of which we get a bit here in Wales!)

Cheers

Peter

Chris, Do you already have a base fitted to your car? If not, then I can highly recommend the Panorama 1/4 wave whip, and through-hole roof mount. It's one of the few mounts that won't leak. Taylor Made RF stock them. Alternatively, if you are confident that you can fit a 3/8" stud mount that won't leak then you can make your own 1/4 wave whip.

Agreed, the Panorama modular and M series antennas are a huge improvement over 'any' so239 type base.

There are tens of thousands of them in commercial use throughout the world.

Only a day or so ago I machined an M6 fine thread to modular adapter to fit a vhf 1/4 wave to a GPS mount like this one http://www.panorama-antennas.com/index. ... duct_id=93
