Hello Mick (I think that's right from QRZ.com)

With a 5 ele beam you should do quite well, assuming you have a half-decent location.

I live at 50m surrounded by 300m hills, so I generally go up one of them to get out, and do reasonably well with a small beam, but sometimes even with a halo.

Activity can be a bit sporadic, but I would definitely suggest trying the UK activity contests, now on the third Thursday of the month at 2000, as that generally gets people out of the woodwork.

Please point your beam towards South West Wales at some point, and I'll try to work you.

Without wishing to appear rude you are hearing beacons as they transmit all the time

Don't just listen - call CQ

If everyone listens no-one hears anyone!

It seems to be a common theme across all the bands these days - I "listened" and didn't hear anyone

Good Luck

Why not try meteor scatter? Good reflections on 4 Metres, and always open, but better in the morning outside meteor showers.
